Just having a look at my Challenge Roth power data, where I didn't ride to power (I actually turned all the power displays off) - I just captured the data I averaged 204 watts for the 5 hours 26 that I rode.

I've not fully analysed the data (I will when I find time to read the hunter allen book) but if I could keep the power to weight ratio up, lose a few pounds and ride more aero on better kit then I'd be flying!

I did a CP30 test three weeks later and held 325w.

Now I'd be lucky to be anywhere close to 275-290 I'd imagine.

Need to get on it Dave, 325 is a great figure and one which should yield an IM split we would all be proud of.

What do you think is most benefit to adding to FTP over the months? Is it threshold intervals/speedwork do you feel, or miles in the saddle.

Do you feel your gains would be acheived without the metering device just by following the coaching plan set, or do you reckon that having metered outputs is vital to keep you zoned.... I hope that makes sense!

Hi Bass, I think that improving the CP score or FTP is very targeted, I have never really put much into measuring the smaller distances or the threshold wattage other than to work out HR ranges to work to, even then it can be hit and miss because of the very nature of HR. (if you want proof just look at this months CP20)
I think there will be some correlation to endurance over time and I have seen a marked improvement in the ability to push harder for longer on weekend rides but that could also be general fitness.

Onto the second point, I feel that the gains would have been achieved but a lot slower and certainly without the focus I have had because of the knowledge of watts in training now. I have always loved turbo work but this just takes it to the next level, so much so I just bought an SRM for road riding and racing, upgraded Training Peaks and have WKO+ software ! I am a geek !
Oh and I now have an FTP of 300w - woohoo.

Neil,

Sorry for delay, I run a standard laptop for the software and its on a 15.4 screen so yes a little bit larger than your MAC.

For me the optimal set up is a 32" screen with VGA input from a PC/laptop, it seems the best way to set up the viewing and get more out of the real DVD videos. And I know you can get cheap 32" screens nowadays.

However, I have spent more time on the 3D software and the CS (coaching) software than I have the DVD's, I am a techie at heart and love the feedback, if I want a no brainer long day in the saddle on a shite day outside then yes I would use a DVD but having a reasonable size screen (15") for the 3D or CS outputs is more than adequate for the Computrainer to feel worth it.
